On Monday, February 5, 2024, one of God's angels, Joyce Diane (Selden) Daniel answered the call of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ from labor to reward. Joyce was born March 17, 1951, to Mildred B. Selden and William L. Selden Jr. (predeceased).
Joyce was a pillar of society and left an indelible mark on her beloved city of Norfolk, Virginia. Joyce leaves behind her husband James Daniel, her adopted children Crystal Jacob and Alton Dickson, her siblings William L. Selden III, Carolyn S. Walker, and Thomas C. Selden. Joyce was predeceased by her brothers Robert A. Selden and Christopher B. Selden. Joyce leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who loved her dearly, Carlos Lopez, Lisa Walker, Shena Watkins, Charita Selden, Jeneen Selden, Robert Selden II, LaKeya Selden, Kimberly Selden, and Traci Selden (predeceased). Joyce also leaves behind a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends to cherish her memory.
Joyce was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, and she is a distinguished alumnus of Norfolk State College, where she received a degree in Finance. Joyce was a retired accountant from the Department of the U.S. Navy (NAVFAC), where she worked as an accountant for over 30 years. Joyce's commitment to her alma mater extended well beyond her matriculation, as Norfolk State became her pride and joy. Joyce was the epitome of green and gold pride (Behold the Green and Gold) as evidenced by her life membership in the Norfolk State University Alumni Association. She served in numerous roles with the National Association and the Norfolk Chapter including national recording secretary, membership chair, president of the Norfolk Alumni Chapter and a member of the Homecoming and Noah Ryder committees. Joyce was also crowned Ms. Alumni in 1983 and received the NSUAA Alumna of the Year Award in 1989. Additionally, Joyce was a member of NSU's Lyman Beecher Brooks Society.
Joyce was known for her philanthropic contributions to both her former college and church, which she loved dearly. In 2018 Joyce and her husband established the Daniel Endowment, a fully funded $25,000 endowment that provided financial assistance to full-time, degree-seeking students in the School of Business. In 2019, Joyce would become a recipient of NSUAA's distinguished donor's club, due to her donations of over $100,000. She also established The William L. and Mildred B. Selden Endowed Scholarship Fund at the Ready Academy Christian School of the Historic First Baptist Church, Bute Street, Norfolk, VA.
Joyce was a born again Christian and lifetime member of the Historic First Baptist Church, Bute Street of Norfolk. Joyce was an active member and rarely missed a Sunday. Joyce served on the Usher Board #2, the Georgia Jefferson and Mary Mason Missionary Circle, the Gleaners Ministry, and the Helpers Ministry. Her devotion to serving extended into the community as she was actively involved in Troop #77 Boy Scouts. Somehow Joyce found the time to engage in various hobbies, traveling, gardening, meeting new people, weekend family trips, cooking delicious holiday dinners, and rooting for her Dallas Cowboys.
Our dear loved one, you lit up the room with your presence. Your heart was pure and kind. You were a lot of things to a lot of people. You were a humble and cheerful giver. You were a light to so many and you will be dearly missed.
