Yolanda Nadine Evans (sans Richard) departed this life surrounded by her family on July 13, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer. Yolanda was born on January 29, 1950 in Bronx, NY to George and Louise (Yeager) Richard. She was the second of five children as well as the oldest daughter. Growing up in the Bronx was an experience for Yolanda and helped her hone her street savvy, wit, and appreciation for life. A few years after her high school graduation, Yolanda moved with her family to Virginia Beach, VA to seek better opportunities. Soon after, she met Eugene Evans of Norfolk, VA and they were married in December 1972. Their union produced three daughters: Dana, Kirsten, and Martine who they raised in Norfolk, VA. Yolanda worked a variety of administrative positions including Norfolk City Treasurer Office and Norfolk Public Schools. Yolanda retired as a nutrition assistant serving the students and staff of Blair Middle School for more than 12 years. She was known and loved by many as her mission was to make sure no child went home hungry on her watch.
After her retirement, Yolanda moved to Chesapeake to be closer to her grandchildren who were her pride and joy. She never missed a school orchestra concert, dance recital, volleyball or soccer game, or other school activity. She was quickly adopted as the school and neighborhood grandma. Yolanda is not only known for her great love and commitment to her family, but also as a history buff and trivia master who could have become a long-term contestant on her favorite game show Jeopardy. She was also a great connoisseur of music with some of her favorite artists being the Beatles, Rolling Stones, the Temptations, the Supremes, and other artists from the '50s and '60s.
Yolanda was preceded in death by her husband Eugene Evans as well as her parents, George and Louise Richard. She leaves behind a great legacy of family including her daughters Dr. Dana Lawson (son-in-love Rev. Clarence Lawson Jr.) of Baton Rouge, LA, Kirsten Johnson of Chesapeake, VA, and Martine Evans (fiancé Brandon Evans) of Houston, TX; granddaughters Brianna Lawson, Jada Lawson, Siara Lawson, Kira Johnson, Makayla Johnson, Ariana Evans, and Mariah Evans; great grandson Cadence Joel Washington; sisters Lynette Brethwaite (Larry) and Valentina Richard; brothers Franchot Richard (Deborah) and Derek Richard (Pamela); sister-in-law Hermione Hodges (William); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and adopted children/grandchildren.
The family sends their deepest appreciation to Dr. Ruby Tucker and her staff at JenCare of Virginia Beach, VA; Virginia Oncology Associates of Chesapeake, VA; and the physicians and staff at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center for their loving care.
