William H. White Sr., 100, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 19, 2024.
William was born in Monessen, Pennsylvania, on February 20, 1924, to Phillip & Mary White with 7 siblings. (Deceased: Phillip, Scipio, Luther, Anna Ruth, Charles, Theodore, Fred). His century-long journey was marked by deep love for family, unwavering faith, and dedication to community service. He lived a life full of purpose and compassion, touching the lives of all who knew him.
William graduated from Monessen High School in 1944 and started his career at US Steel, and then honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. His service exemplified his bravery and commitment to protecting the nation, a legacy that inspires pride in his family and community. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for Norfolk Redevelopment Housing Authority and The Navy Exchange.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Ethel R. White, daughter Jennifer White Lee and cherished grandson Desmond White. He leaves behind his devoted children William "Billy" White Jr., Claudia Anderson, and James White, who carry forward his legacy of integrity and kindness. His grandchildren Brian White, Christopher White, and Exum Lee III remember him as a pillar of love and inspiration. William's legacy continues with his four great-grandchildren, who will grow up with stories of his remarkable life and the values he stood for.
Throughout his life, William was an active member of St. John's A.M.E. church in Norfolk, offering his time and resources to help those in need. He was the President of Male Usher Board and a member of the St. John's A.M.E Trustee board. His enduring faith and generous spirit left an indelible mark on countless lives. His wisdom, strength, and compassion were felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As we gather today to celebrate William's life, we remember a man whose life was a testament to perseverance, faith, and the profound impact one person can have on those around them. His legacy lives on in our hearts and minds, reminding us of the power of love, faith, and community.
