IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William James
Rogers
July 29, 1937 – August 16, 2019
William James Rogers was born on July 29, 1937 in Norfolk, VA to the late William and Annie Rogers. He attended the old St. Joseph Catholic School and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in the class of 1956. He attended Norfolk State College for two years, where he proved to be one of the most outstanding basketball players produced by both schools.
William James Rogers was one of Tidewater's finest basketball players. He learned to play basketball in the streets of Norfolk where the "run" and "gun" technique made him one of the best guards in the game. He missed out on the offers of many scouts, because they did not recruit black players during the early fifties into the ABA or the NBA.
William retired from Norfolk City Schools as a paint contractor. He served the school system for more than twenty-five years. He was an exceptional interior/exterior paint contractor. He used the same magic hand that he used to handle the basketball to maintain his trade. As the owner of his business, he was so careful, gentle and exact about his work and he had a long list of clients waiting for his service. His handiwork can be seen throughout the halls of First Baptist Church as well as in many homes and schools in the Tidewater area. His signature tagline was "If I Can Reach It, I Can Paint It".
Mr. Rogers was a member of The Historic First Baptist Church where he served as an usher. He worked to promote the fellowship that was so highly regarded by his fellow ushers. He was a member of the Chancel Choir and served as a trustee from 1985 to 1990. In June 1987, he was honored as "Father of the Year" by First Baptist Church.
William Rogers was predeceased by his sister, Corine Futrell and his brother, Wilbur Wright.
William leaves to mourn his passing devoted daughter, Alexis Cassandra Rogers of Chesapeake, his loving sons, Eric W. Rogers of Norfolk and William Rogers of Virginia Beach; his former wife, Lula Sears Rogers of Chesapeake; one sister, Mrs. Joyce R. Smith (Roger) of Norfolk and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and "paint partners" from Norfolk City Schools.
Mr. Rogers was a man of pride and he fought a great fight. He will be sorely missed.
