William A. Carr, Jr. (Bill) peacefully departed his earthly life on Saturday, August 1, 2026, after a long illness. He was 82 years old.

Born on St. Patrick’s Day to his parents, William A. Carr, Sr. and Mabel Bryant Carr, Bill was the oldest of three children. He attended St. Joseph’s School and graduated from Norfolk Catholic High School where he was a member of the football and wrestling teams. After graduation, he briefly worked in logistics with the Navy and as a first responder at Norfolk Int’l Airport. However, Bill had a desire to see the world. He joined the U.S. Merchant Marine as a merchant seaman. He visited ports of call throughout Central and South America, Europe and Asia. After sustaining an injury on ship, Bill returned to Norfolk and pursued his education. He graduated from Norfolk State University with a B.A. in Sociology. Afterwards, he began his long career as a probation officer with the Norfolk City Courts System until retirement.

Bill was a lifelong member of The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception. He volunteered as a cook in the church’s soup kitchen and served in the bereavement ministry. He was known to attend Mass on Saturday’s and Sunday’s, often providing transportation for elderly members of the congregation. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, holding a variety of roles and leadership positions, receiving a myriad of awards and recognition.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Karen Carr Davis. His memory will forever be cherished by his brother Lawrence Carr (Patty) of Napa, CA, and his nieces who affectionately called him ‘Uncle Junnie’: Christina Robinson (Steve) of Bowie, MD; Cheryl Lawton (Cleon) of Suffolk, VA; Kris Carr of San Antonio, TX; and Valerie Sampson (Dwayne) of Richmond, VA; seven great nephews and nieces of which he was extremely proud, four great-great nephews and nieces, and a host of family and friends. The family is forever grateful to Ms. Lillian Alston Cousar for providing him with excellent caregiving and friendship.

A memorial repast is planned for Thursday, August 6 at 12 noon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 232 Chapel St., Norfolk, VA. A graveside homegoing celebration will follow at 2:00 pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, 3000 Granby St., Norfolk, VA. All are welcome.
