Obituary

Vivian, 98, the oldest of four children blessed in birth to Mattie and Charles A. Davis Sr. died on December 23, 2013. She was educated in both private and public schools in Norfolk and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She attended Virginia State College, now University, and received her under graduate degree in education. Later she attended Teachers College, Columbia University and was granted the Masters degree. Vivian taught in the Norfolk Public Schools for over thirty years. She married her childhood sweetheart, Frank M. Cartwright, the couple had three sons, Melvin and Douglas, now deceased and Frank(Donzella) Cartwright. Vivian also raised five grandchildren, Toni (William) Moore, Christopher (Annette) Douglas (Michelle) Corry and Nicole. Other grandchildren are Cynthia Rasulo, Frank Cartwright(Lisa) and Krystal Cartwright. Other survivors are her sister, Alberta Davis Hobson, brother Col. (Ret.) Preston A. Davis, Sr. of Washington D.C., two daughters in law, Vida Cartwright and Daisy Cartwright, 13 great grandchildren and many other nieces, great nieces and great nephews. Mrs. Cartwright joined Bethlehem Baptist Church and began an active role in the church and community affairs. She was a member of the Trustee Board, a member and past president of the Maggie Walker Missionary Circle, member of the Senior Choir, church historian, director of Vacation Bible School and several auxiliaries. Awards of appreciation were given to her by the Womens Auxiliary, Virginia Baptist Convention; Missionaries and Bible School Members of Bethlehem, Uzzle School of Music, the Tidewater Peninsula Baptist Association, and the Teachers Corp. Vivian worked on the Norfolk Committee for the Improvement of Education and the Hal Jackson Talented Teen Committee. She was also involved in music and played the piano in church when asked and for the Norfolk Area and Missionary Council
