Veda Mae Jones was born in Norfolk, VA on March 21, 1951 to the late Dora L. Smith and Lawrence J. Jones. She is a proud native of the Park Place community. She was educated through Norfolk Public Schools where she received her General Education Diploma.
Veda Mae later gained employment at Smithfield Packing Company where she dedicated 6 years of her life. She earned a supervisory role after only being with the company for a short while.
She was well- known and loved by many. Her squinted- eyed smile was infectious. Veda Mae's greatest attribute was her generosity and compassion towards others. She didn't do much talking, but was more of a listener and a helping hand to those around her. One of her favorite sayings was, "Don't Talk About It, Be About It". Veda Mae was strong and fearless. Over the last few years, she courageously battled sickness and the family watched her fight until the very end. She was affectionately referred to as the family's "Warrior Princess" during her final days.
She was preceded in death by her son: Jervon Jones; a grandson: Jakwon Hawkins; two brothers: Garnett Cross and Van Jones; and a sister: Belinda Jones.
Veda Mae leaves to cherish her memory her daughter: Jessica Newsome (Irving); three grandchildren: Kieara Braxton, Jervon Jones- Dixon, and Darvon Dixon; eight great grandchildren; three sisters; Annie Mae Davis, June Fells, and Vanessa Stewart; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Veda Mae Jones will surely be missed, as she was a true legend!
