IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thelma Walker
Fentress
January 3, 1930 – December 1, 2022
Thelma W. Fentress was a mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend to many. She gained her angel wings on December 1, 2022.
She leaves behind a son, Maurice E. Fentress, a sister, Shirley Simmons (Lamar), 3 grandchildren, Anissa L. White, Michael A. Fentress, and Tracy A. Fentress, as well as many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by 2 wonderful children, Milton L. Fentress and Belinda J. White, 2 grandchildren, Arcelious J. White III and Travis A. Fentress, and 2 sisters, Frances Urquhart and Mary Jane Calvert.
Thelma was born in Jaratt, VA on January 3, 1930, to Albert Walker and Elnora Gray. She was always a very independent and inquisitive child and spent a majority of her time with her aunt and grandmother. She was educated in the Portsmouth Public School System before becoming a mother to her 3 children. She enjoyed an exciting career as an Anesthesiologist Aide at Sentara Norfolk General hospital until she retired in 1995 after 24 years of service.
She was a natural nurturer who had a passion for helping others, especially for the elderly and those who were sick. So, it was only fitting that after she retired from Sentara, she'd continue working as a home health care aide in the Tidewater area for several families for years to come. She did what she loved until she decided to take a step back and focus on enjoying her retirement and spending much needed time with her loved ones.
She was a feisty little firecracker with a no-nonsense personality. Her heart was huge, and she'd give anyone the shirt off of her back if they needed it. She was a hard worker and a fighter! She overcame every trial with grace and poise. She never asked, "why me?!" She simply held onto her faith and did what she needed to do to get through it. Giving up was never an option for her. Her fighting spirit is what motivated her grand & great-granddaughters, Anissa & N'Kyrah, as she dealt with several medical emergencies starting September 2021. No matter what challenges came her way, she kept that spunky, quick-witted attitude throughout it all, and showed that she was the epitome of strength. To be a part of her life was a true blessing, and she will be missed immensely by all who knew and loved her.
Special thanks go to all who helped and/or checked on Thelma over the years or was just a listening ear when she needed it.
