IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Terry Lee
Hayes "Turk"
January 19, 1970 – October 10, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we gather for the celebration of life for Terry Lee Hayes, who left us far too soon on October 10, 2024. Terry, also affectionately known as "Turk", was born to the late Trudy L. Hayes and Alvah Merritt Jr. on January 19, 1970, in Norfolk, Virginia. He was not just a beloved son, brother, father, and grandfather, but the life of every room he walked into–a person who lived for family, sports, and enjoying life.
Terry was raised with his four brothers and sister, surrounded by love, laughter, and sports. As a child Terry fell in love with the sport of football when he played for the youth league, The Oakmont Corrupters. His competitive spirit earned him MVP in the "Pee-Wee" division, and after that a star was born! Terry was known as being a fierce competitor on the football field and the basketball court and quickly became a standout athlete at Norview High School. During his senior year, his incredible athletic talent earned him accolades such as First Team All-State, All Region Player, and was ranked the #2 Linebacker in the country. After graduating from "The View" in 1989, Terry went on to attend Potomac State College furthering both his academic and athletic endeavors.
Terry enjoyed a career as a Shift Manager at Office Max for many years where his leadership and work ethic were greatly valued.
Terry's hidden talent was cooking. Whether he was experimenting with something new, hosting Thanksgiving, or perfecting the recipe for his special sauce for his delicious crabs, (EVERYBODY LOVED TERRY'S STEAMED CRABS!!) The kitchen was a place full of music and laughter... and every meal was prepared with love. One of his greatest pleasures was seeing others enjoy what he had prepared.
Terry was always the life of the party, living his life unapologetically. He was a true friend to everyone fortunate enough to know him, cherishing friendships that evolved from childhood into adulthood. One of his favorite songs "If My Homies Call" by 2Pac embodied how he felt for his friends, if the Case Crew called, he would be there!
He was also a diehard Raider's fan. Whether they were in Oakland or Las Vegas, black and silver ran through his veins and his allegiance never changed. Every time you saw Terry, he was decked out in the latest Raiders jackets, jerseys, hats and caps...and let's not forget about the shell-toe Adidas!
Beyond his love for sports, Terry loved his family tremendously. The relationship with his mother was one of deep respect, care, and affection. Equally strong was the bond with his sister and four brothers. They were not just siblings, but best friends. Terry was a devoted father of two, and grandfather whose greatest joy in life was the love he had for them. They were his world. His love was unconditional and was always there to lift them up no matter what life brought their way. He taught them to be strong, face life head on and never back down from what they believed in. His fearless nature made him a protector and was always there when they needed him. His greatest legacy will always be the love and care he gave to them. His absence leaves an irreplaceable void, but the memories of his love will live in their hearts forever.
Terry is survived by his two loving children Taniya Hayes and Terry Hayes Jr.; one granddaughter, Noelle; four brothers Rufus Hayes (and wife Traci), Keith Hayes (and wife Tawanda), Chris Hayes (and wife Danita), Roy Harris Jr (and wife Sonja)., one sister, Regina Merritt Joyner (and husband Horace); grandmother, Barbara Merritt; his devoted friend , Sharnise Baltzeigler; and a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, a bonus daughter, and bonus grandson.
Though Terry is no longer with us, the love, loyalty, and friendship he shared will live on in the hearts of all who knew him
