IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Stephen A
Gibson
June 10, 1947 – May 4, 2019
Our dear Stephen ( Steve) A. Gibson left life on earth Saturday, May 4, 2019 at his Norfolk residence. Left to mourn his death are two adult children: Stephen A. Gibson and Teressa Gibson; eight siblings: Colvin Gibson (Ann), Larry Gibson (Phyllis), Cynthia White Anderson (Tyrone), Antonio White (Evelyna) Sheila White Evans), Jimmy Evans (Beverly), Patricia Evans, and Joyce Wilson as well as his beloved grandchildren and greatgrandchildren and a host of other family members and friends. He was predeceased by brothers James Talley and Reynell White as well as parents Beatrice Gibson White and James White.
Steve was born in Norfolk June 10, 1947 and lived in Norfolk his entire life. By growing up on Chapel Street, Young Park, Ghent and Chesterfield Heights and attending Norfolk Public Schools he gained a perspective for the southeastern United States. He graduated from Maury High School and spent a couple of years at Norfolk State University before working nearly 40 years at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, rising through ranks to become Marine Machinist Supervisor.
Over these decades, he had experiences as a youth into adulthood that further expanded his world view. These included competitive sandlot baseball, football, and the socialization that led to a thrill of automobiles and entertainment including the "art" of dancing and job- related travel.
However, he didn't short change religion as he had periods of consistent church attendance at St. Paul Methodist Church and at a 26 th Street church. He also spent time in independent Bible study and meditation that might come as a surprise to some.
Before and after retirement, Steve became a fixture at Broadway and Upscale, entertainment establishments in Tidewater. He was their unofficial artist or dancer in residence. Reportedly, Harlem Renaissance dancers would have faced tough competition on some of Steve's good nights.
While there has not been confirmation, he also asserted that he had cooking. gardening and a variety of other skills. He was a person of many talents including spinning a tale or two from time to time. In any event, the family loved him and will miss him. May Steve rest in peace
