Obituary

Ruth G. Jordan was born February 6, 1935 in Norfolk,Virginia. On Sunday November 8, 2015 God called home his faithful servant. She was the second of three children born to the union of the late Peter A. and Edythe Green.Ruth's nurturing by her parents emphasized the importance of both spiritual and educational development. Ruth was baptized at an early age and has been a faithful member of the First Calvary Baptist Church for many, many years. First Calvary was the major source of her spiritual journey. There she was an active member, always volunteering and diligently serving in various capacities, including the Woman's Club. Ruth began her education by attending Norfolk Public Schools and she was determined to pursue higher education, through achieving her Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies and later her Master of Arts in Urban Studies, both at Norfolk State University. Additionally, Ruth had completed all the necessary course requirements for her doctorate in Education at Walden University. Ruth was certainly a very energetic person and a lover of people, who actively sought out opportunities to be of service to others. Family and friends meant everything to Ruth. She looked forward to traveling to and participating annually in her family reunion, "The Roberts Family Reunion", for over 40 years. Ruth often hosted the annual event and her coordination of fun, food, family and fellowship was legendary. Ruth's other lover was her career at Norfolk State University(NSU) She joined NSU after retiring from WTKR. At NSU she worked tirelessly aith the students in many different capacities but her special love was student support. She traveled with the Evening College students, coaching and helping these young adults to acclimate to career opportunities. She also provided guidance to freshman students, along with tutorial and mentorship to athletes. In her mentoring capacity, Ruth frequently provided food, housing, clothing and financial support to destitute students. She chaperoned student athletes to various games and outings and remained their biggest cheerleader. The Office of Student Support Services Program, was not just Ruth's site of employment, but it was her extended family. Even after retiring from NSU, she remained a beloved "Mother Figure" for students, often receiving daily calls and sharing in special occasions with her devoted students. She was an active member of the NSU Alumni Association and she was the chairperson of the Ways and Means Committee of the Norfolk State University Retirees Association. She was an original member of Les Gemmes Femmes Social Club. Ruth Jordan's other passion was being an lover of sports. If NSU was playing basketball or football, Ruth was there, often with a bus load of supporters that she rallied together for away games. Over the years, many of the NSU athletes adopted her as their "other mother" because of her strong values, loyal support and encouragement. She was proud of her family, especially her sons Lydell and Herbert. She was also devoted to her grandchildren and her loving brother, David. She relished in her family roots from Dinwiddie County,VA and her role as matriarch at the annual family reunions and other gatherings. Ruth will fondly be remembered as the ultimate friend, and good human being, who was known for always graciously welcoming you into her home with a HUG,a SMILE, a GREAT MEAL, GOOD CONVERSATION, and ENDLESS HOSPITALITY!! May GOD BLESS her world and loving spirit. Ruth G. Jordan's legacy will continue to thrive and be represented by her beloved sons; Lydell(Vanessa) Herbert(Nadine) her brother, David Green(Jannie) grandchildren, Desmond Jordan and Anthony Bunn; great grandchildren Anthony Jr., Akari and Aiden Bunn; four nieces, two nephews and a host of great devoted friends and extended family.
