On February 4, 2022, Robert Hinton Crews answered the call and transitioned peacefully to be with the Lord and his wife Kat. Born on March 17, 1930, in Bluefield, West Virginia to William and Hallie (Bowman) Crews, he was the fifth of 10 children and lived to be 91. He served in the United States Army as a Corporal during the Korean War. He was a Golden Glove Boxing Champion and attended Bluefield State College where he played football, pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Beta Theta Chapter, and studied physical education. His devotion to financially support his siblings resulted in him leaving college and entering the workforce. He effectively negotiated the allocation of his GI Bill to support the education of his four younger sisters.
Learning of work opportunities with Norfolk and Western Railroad, he came to Norfolk, VA in the 1950's. In Norfolk, he found his life-long love, Kathryn. They shared 61 years of love and mutual admiration for each other. Their love touched the hearts of many and served as a model to others.
Longtime residents of the Fernwood Farms community in Chesapeake, they were blessed with their son Robert Clinton in 1969 and the Lord blessed them in 1972 with the birth of their daughter Kimberly Denise. Further blessings were punctuated with the birth of their grandson, Robert (Robbie) Crews Easter in 2012 aka Number 1.
He retired from Norfolk and Southern Railroad in 1990. He served the Lord through stewardship as a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church. He and Kathryn (together) supported numerous church ministries and outreach activities including attending various church conventions throughout the country as official representatives of Shiloh. In retirement, he discovered that he had a knack for household repairs. He quickly became the neighbor's "fix-it man". This afforded him and Kat the opportunity to travel. Of their travel adventures, their trip to Hawaii in 1993 was his favorite.
He is preceded in death by brother William Crews Jr., daughter Robyn Anita Crews, mother Hallie Bowman Crews, father William Moses Crews, sisters Frances Mae Mudrock, Eva Aileen Montgomery, brothers Roger and Shirley Crews, and his devoted wife Kathryn Dolores Crews.
He is survived by children Robert Clinton, Kimberly Easter (Omar), grandson Robbie, sisters Amrizene Harris (Jacob), Betty Ann Graves, Jean Olivia Rozelle, brother Benjamin David (Aleneitha) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren.
Mr. Crews, Brother Crews, Uncle Bob, Uncle Robert, Bob's friendly disposition resulted in people gravitating to him causing him not to have known a stranger. He served as a surrogate father and a role model to many. He often bestowed this sage advice, "You are only and good as your word" (1542) .
Truthful, trustworthy, reliable and honorable is/was our dad.
