"Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted."
Matthew 5:4
M amie Helen Debnam became one of God's angels on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 after an acute battle with cancer. Mamie was born January 26, 1937 in Norlina, North Carolina to the late William Buck Davis and Irene Davis. Mamie is predeceased by her husband, Clemon. One of eleven children, Mamie was predeceased by William R. Davis, Sim Davis, Thomas Davis, Jimmy Davis, James Davis, Ernest Davis, Edward Davis, Martha Ann Shearin, and Corleen Robinson. Her granddaughter, Taylor, also predeceased her. She is survived by her best friend and sister, Minnie Smith. Raised in North Carolina, Mamie attended North Carolina Public Schools and graduated from North Warren County High School in Wise, North Carolina in 1955. Mamie met her late husband, Clemon, at the Blue Light Inn in Norlina, North Carolina. On December 8, 1956, Mamie married Clemon, and a short time later, in 1958, they moved to Virginia.Mamie and Clemon celebrated their sixty-fourth anniversary last year. This year and eternally they will continue to celebrate their union together in Heaven. During Mamie's career, she worked with Norfolk Public Schools in the Schools Nutrition Program with twenty-eight years of service. She retired July 1, 1999. Mamie's service to the students, teachers, and staff was an extension of the love and nurturing that she provided to her own family. Affectionately known as "Mama", Mamie was the matriarch of the Debnam Family. Mamie consistently ensured that her family was well fed, dressed neatly, and participated in family events and reunions. Mamie's love for her home was evident as you could feel the warmth and secureness upon crossing its threshold; always clean and neat with scents of love throughout. Mamie's true love was music, dancing, and cooking. At any moment of time, you could walk in a room and see Mamie busting a move swaying her hips from side to side. Mamie's love for music definitely was passed down to her daughters and grandchildren. She often played music daily in her home. If you looked up the definition of cooking in the dictionary, Mamie Debnam's picture should be next to the word Mamie is known for many family favorites to include her potato salad, linguine, sweet potato and coconut pies, pancakes, baked chicken, chitlins, corn pudding, sweet tea, biscuits, and the list goes on. The holidays were always celebrated with succulent foods and music, such as The Temptations' "Silent Night". Anyone blessed to eat a home cooked meal by Mamie ate a meal made with love. It was known that she was going to make Shawn's plate. Mamie also loved going to Red Lobster with her family to celebrate her birthday. Mamie leaves to cherish her memory five daughters, Diane Debnam (Linda), Helen German (Tony), Brenda Jones (Gene), Nadine Debnam-Spivey (Deno), and Veronica Debnam; sister and best friend, Minnie Smith (Ed); sister and brother in laws, Emma Davis (Nathaniel), Patricia Thornton, Mary Watts, (Leslie), Waverly Debnam, Clyde Debnam (Sabrina), Vernon Debnam (Marie), Judy Debnam and Shirley Debnam; grandchildren Catres Mayers (Kenneth), Deshawn Debnam (Phelecia), Christopher Debnam, Sydney Spivey, and Nicholas German; great grandchildren, Darren Debnam, Isaiah Riddick-Debnam, Kennedy Mayers, Kenneth Mayers, Karrington Riddick-Debnam, Yaniyah Harrell, and Jace Wilson; honorary son and daughter, Michael and Joyce Moore; great friends Ms. Battle, Jackie, and Anthony; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
