Obituary

Well known Visual Storyteller and Gifted Artist, "MAIZELLE", 83, made her transition early Saturday at Norfolk Sentara Hospital on November 2, 2024. A native of Norfolk, Va. Her work within serving her community spans decades. Being one of the first African American artists to integrate art exhibits in the Hampton Roads region, she worked over 25 years with Community Mental Health as the art activities person. Her immense artistic talents and vision open doors to unique opportunities to curate and take part in art exhibits in several galleries from Va, Beach to Lynchburg, she had her first art gallery, The Art Cellar.in Downtown Norfolk In early 80's,  She has been the recipient of many awards and honors over the years: 13 years on the Norfolk Public Arts Commission, Key to the City of Portsmouth, UMOJA FESTIVAL Creator of the Umoja Logo " The Family"  10th Anniversary Award, State Senate Proclamation., Attucks Theater Honors 2012,  South Eastern Arts Association 25th Anniversary Award, , AFR'AM FEST Artistic Achievers Award 2003,  Young People's Guild  Hall of Fame Leadership Presentation Award 2008-2009, etc..  She is survived by her five children: Shawn Brown Robinson, Peter Brown, Noelle Watts Darton, Larnell, Darrell Brown and, son-in-law Jerry Anthony Yost. Seven grandchildren: DeMario D. Robinson, Brian L. Robinson, Shanice T. Morris, Andrea Cary, Kendall Myett Brown, Jordan Anthony Yost Sr. Desmond Anthony Yost- seven great grandchildren: Samaria Hardy, DeMarion Hardy, Terrionte  Hardy- Cary, Jazmine Bowden, Jayden Myett Horne, Datreon Kivon Brown, Kayden King Rogers, and Jordan Anthony Yost Jr. - Three sisters: Valerie Yvette Richeson, Kim Bloyce Zabala, Sherrie Mae Calloway, and brother-in-law Louis Zabala. as well as a host of beloved cousins, nieces and nephews as well as extended family kinfolk friends like her best friend Andrea Jean Britton aka "Betty Boo" and Raymond Calloway.  Promdate and dear friend E. Preston Riddick as well as dear friends in her art family.She is predeceased by her parents: Wilbert Brown and Lorraine Brown, Brothers Alton Brown, Norman Brown,  Wiilbert Brown, and sister Audrey Breeden., and sister-in-law LaVera Brown.: Thomas and Elnora Brown, Joshua and Sallie Mae Jordan. Uncles., Aunts, and Cousins. Best friend, Andrea Britton, aka "Betty Boo" Heartfelt l remembrances: Fred Cason and Eugene F. Watts. Maizelle's impact on the importance of serving her community, volunteering, and sharing her artistic gifts especially with the younger generation.of  creative brilliant minds.Her paintings/ artworks have been and can currently be seen at the Barry Art Museum, Norfolk Botanical Gardens, Umoja Festival / Portsmouth City Hall, Chrysler Museum, Nauticus Norfolk State University Gallery and Hampton Fine Arts Museum. World Trade Building, Suffolk Art Gallery, etc. Maizelle always believed in supporting artists, especially buying and collecting original works. There will be a private repass for the family afterwards.
