Joyce Jeannette Holloman Turner (Joyce), native of Ahoskie, North Carolina, was born on October 28, 1935, to the late Clarence and Cleo Holloman. She was the second of five children and was a woman who quietly and intently loved God and her family throughout her entire life. Joyce gave her life to Christ at an early age and faithfully served in the Church of God in Christ for more than 50 years. In her later years, she was a faithful member of New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ until her declining health hindered her attendance.

Joyce was married to the love of her life, Clyde Turner, for more than 68 years, and they were blessed with five children. Joyce was committed to her family and chose not to work outside of the home during the early years of her marriage to care for her children. While many saw a stay-at-home mom, Joyce was a quiet, but savvy businesswoman who tirelessly worked with her husband to launch A & Z Apartments, a property investment and management company that was a staple in the Hampton Roads area. She often said, “When you are trying to start something, you can’t tell everybody everything and sometimes you can’t even let your right hand know what your left hand is doing.”

After all her children were in school, she worked full time in their business alongside her husband as the Vice President until she retired. She had a fantastic memory and her ability to quickly recall names and dates was remarkable. These were traits that served her well. The residents she served in their business described her as compassionate, but “no- nonsense.” In fact, she would quietly tell them, “Please don’t mistake my quietness for weakness.” She was a true leader in her own right.

Joyce enjoyed spending time with her husband, children, siblings, and friends. She loved traveling, shopping, and touring model homes. Her late husband would say that all you had to say was “Let’s and Joyce would say “Go.” Joyce often talked about the lessons she learned from her parents. They taught her the value of loving God, family, and others and those are lessons that she embodied and instilled in her family. Joyce loved attending family events and sitting up late nights drinking coffee and eating dessert while talking with her sister Matt and her good friend Josephine.

Beyond her many roles, responsibilities and accomplishments, Joyce was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. And above all, she would want to be remembered simply as a kind woman who loved God and others.

She will be sorely missed, but we know to be “absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” (2 Corinthians 5:8)

Joyce departed this life to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. She leaves to celebrate her life and legacy her five children, Deborah Williams, Pamela Giles (deceased), Clyde Anthony Turner (Clivel), Bonnie Bridges (Vincent) Patrice Collins (Fulmer); seven grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends who loved her dearly.
