Joseph Lee Payton (January 26, 1927 – November 11, 2021) 94, passed away on November 11, 2021. "Joe" was born in Norfolk to Novella Payton. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 56 years (Ernestine Whitehead Payton). He is survived by his faithful daughters Barbara Payton and Debbie Payton (Warren McCaden), nephew Earon Payton, and niece Jesse Boyd (Earl Boyd). He was universally loved in the community. Joe had a loveable personality with his quick wit and sparkle in his eyes, he never met a stranger.  Joe was a proud veteran who served in the Army and the Navy and enjoyed being a member of the American Legion Post # 60. After serving in the military, he worked as a milk truck delivery driver, a mechanic at the Norfolk Naval Base, a taxi driver and retired from Watters and Martin Wholesale Hardware where he delivered to small hardware stores across the state. He joined First Calvary Baptist Church at the age of 14 and remained a faithful member until his passing. He served on the usher board, was a member of the Men of Calvary and drove the church bus to provide rides to and from church for members without transportation. He loved his family, his church, and The Lord. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to First Calvary Baptist Church's Building Fund/Capital Campaign.
