"To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose
under the heaven" Ecclesiastes 3:1
Joel Leon Hathaway was born in Norfolk, Virginia on
April 30, 1959 to the late Joe Fisher and Edna Hart. Joel was
educated in Norfolk Public Schools and graduated from Booker
T. Washington High School in 1977. He continued his education
at North Carolina A&T University.
Joel received Jesus Christ and was baptized at an early age
at New Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, Virginia. He later
joined United Community Church under the leadership of Pastor
Lucretia Mason-Underdue, where he remained an active member
until his untimely passing.
Joel worked for Sentara Hospital and years later he was
able to retire. His love for sports led him to mentor, coach and
later recruit young athletes in the Tidewater area. He also worked
for 757 Recruit Scouting as a Scouting Consultant, where he
connected with various athletes to help them further their
education and play sports on the next level.
Joel personified integrity, class, and style. He was a caring
and thoughtful man who would always be there to lend a hand.
He was an avid sports fan, talented artist, and music lover. He
enjoyed spending time with family and friends. You would
always catch him enjoying his favorite sports teams when they
were playing, especially the San Francisco 49ers Football Team.
"Big Joe" as he was known for in the 757 area, will truly be
missed by many. We all loved him, but God loved him best. Joel
has a "New Assignment", in a more heavenly place with our
eternal Father.
Joel is predeceased by his wife, Shounda Hathaway.
Survived by his brothers and sister, Melvin Hart, Joseph Fisher,
Dr. Cedrick Fisher, and Twyla Fisher Burton. He also leaves to
cherish his stepson, Joshua Hathaway, and his aunts: Addie
Whitaker and Ernestine Douglas; Cousins, Joanne Brooks, Harold
Hathaway, Anthony Holloway, Sonya Smith, and Sean
Hathaway. His devoted sister-in-law, Zena Ward and Brother-inlaw
