Jannie Mae Harris Robinson was the youngest daughter of the late Eunice and Willie Harris. Born on August 3 rd 1948, she was destined to leave an impact on the world.
Jannie was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School, Jannie continued to strive for higher education. She subsequently found a home at Norfolk State University where she became a member of the illustrious Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. With the completion of her studies, Jannie became the first member of her family to earn a college degree. This was just the start of Jannie's impactful life.
Many would say that Jannie was just a teacher, but she was so much more. To colleagues she was a partner and always there to lend a hand whenever duty called. To new teachers she was a steady source of reassurance that their jobs were meaningful. To her students she was a guide, she was a disciplinarian, and she was hope. As a teacher at Ingleside Elementary School, Jannie touched the lives of hundreds of students and likely a few parents as well. She gave her all to the role of educator and after 39 years of invaluable service to the Norfolk Public School System, in 2010, Jannie retired.
Jannie was a faithful member of First Calvary Baptist Church for more than 50 years. She had a heart for the well-being of others, sharing acts of kindness, love, and compassion. She was a fighter with a smile that could light up a room and a laugh that touched your soul.
On May 28 th 2022, after a lengthy battle with cancer, Jannie was called home to be with the Lord. She is survived by two beautiful daughters: Brigitte Childs and Kathryn Curry Robinson. Jannie is also survived by one sister; Gladys Massenburg (Stephen), her ex-husband; Alvino Robinson, five grandchildren; Tierra Childs, Tayshawn Childs, Tyree Childs, Taylen Childs, Ziyon Johnson, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will continue to hold her light in their hearts. Jannie's beautiful life will forever be cherished. Her legacy and love will continue to live on in those she knew and those she never knew she reached.
