James Hamilton Alexander, 89, entered into eternal rest on October 1, 2018. He was born October 19, 1928 to the late Rev. J.O. Alexander and Sadie Armstrong Alexander in Norfolk County, VA (now Chesapeake).  He was reared in a Christian home with 1 brother and 3 sisters.

Graduating from Providence High School, James studied at Howard University and Hampton Institute (now University). He enlisted in the United States Army in November 1950 where he earned a rank of Corporal and was honorably discharged in October 1956 with a certificate of honest and faithful service.

After an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, he was employed by the United States Postal Service and retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 34 years of service as the Supervisor of Computer Forwarding System in 1984. He worked as a Realtor for Goodman-Segar-Hogan for 12 years and retired in 1996.

James was unioned into holy matrimony to Jean Alma Carter of Richmond, VA on February 25, 1961. To this union, one daughter, Jamean was born.

James and Jean joined Bank Street Baptist Church in January 1963 under the ministry of the late Rev. Dr. John B. Henderson where he was a dedicated and faithful member for 55 years.

He served as Treasurer for 34 years and Assistant Treasurer, member of the Finance Committee, member of the Ballard-Epperson and Roy Wood's Church School classes, Male Usher Ministry and Mentor Ministry. James retired from the position of Treasurer on February 27, 1999. The title of Treasurer Emeritus was bestowed on James H. Alexander as an expression of appreciation for his uniquely variable contributions in God's service to humankind by the late Rev. Dr. Cedric Kirkland-Harris and congregation.

Affectionately known as "Jimmy" or "Alex", he was an avid bowler and gardener who received many awards and trophies. He was a former President of the Bachelor-Benedict Social Club and the Local Chapter President of the National Association of Postal Supervisors, Branch 132.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. and Mrs. J.O. Alexander, a brother, Robert Lee Alexander, sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine and James Ferebee and brother-in-law, Joseph Adams. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean Alexander, Norfolk, VA; a daughter, Jamean Alexander, Va. Beach, VA; two sisters, Maude Adams and Jewelle Alexander, Bronx, NY; 2 nephews, Ryan Ferebee, Chesapeake, VA; Andre Ganther, Columbus, OH; one aunt Sophie Alexander, Chesapeake, VA; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and friends. His family wishes to specially acknowledge and express our sincerest appreciation to his loving caregivers Carolyn, Dorothy, Ramora, Latrice, Marcia, Angela and Belinda.
