Obituary

Hermione W. Jackson, a long-time resident of Norfolk, Virginia, passed away on Friday, October 21, 2016 at the age of 101.  She was born in the small Mississippi Delta town of Belzoni to the late Sherman and Lillian Rogers.  She graduated from Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi in 1936 with a Bachelors in Music and English and later attained a Bachelors (1947) and Masters (1950) in Classical Piano from Northwestern University.  She joined the faculty of Jackson State University where she taught piano, music theory and directed choral programs.  After several years, she moved to Norfolk, marrying the late George R. Jackson.  A good portion of the 57 years she resided in Norfolk was spent teaching at her beloved Booker T. Washington High School and Maury High School as piano instructor, choral director and handbell choir conductor.  She always had an exquisite touch on the piano, playing music from several genres which kept her performances in the Tidewater area in demand.  She was a faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church where she served on several Church Guilds and as organist and choir director for some years.  She was a member of Iota Omega Chapter of AKA Sorority, Inc. and the Women's Club of Norfolk.  She moved to Georgia in 2010 to live closer to her son and daughter-in-law and found that her talent had no bounds.  The Atlanta community embraced her artistry and marveled at her unique command of the piano even into her late 90s and 100s.  She received numerous awards and recognitions from dignitaries for her many community contributions and the giving of her immense, unique talent. Left to cherish her memories are her son, Richard Williams (Louisa), grandchildren Cheryl Williams and  Stephen Williams (Mei-ying), and great grandson, Amil.  Other family members who will always remember her music and wit include nieces Sandra Jackson (Dosh), Gloria Parker, Sandra Rogers, Mildred L. Paris and nephew Daniel Rogers, as well as a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins and family friends. In lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made to the Hermione Jackson Scholarship Fund, Iota Omega Chapter of AKA, P.O. Box 2732, Norfolk,VA 23501
