Greta R. Kindred (nee Russell), 98 years of age, the only child of the late Lucille C. and Junius B. Russell, was called home to the Lord early Wednesday morning, March 5, 2025, after a life richly lived in kindness and service.

Young Greta grew up in Norfolk, Virginia. She was a student at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk and a graduate of West Virginia State College (now University). After college, she returned to Norfolk where she lived, worked, and raised her family. She honorably retired after a long career as a civilian employee of the United States Department of the Navy. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lambert's Point Norfolk where she faithfully taught Sunday School for many years; and later joined Second Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk where she attended Sunday school and Bible Study classes.  She was a lifelong learner and in retirement even took on a new challenge working part-time for three years with the City of Norfolk Parking Division.

Her family and friends will remember her as a strong, caring, and loving woman who could always be counted on for support and kindness in a time of need. She was a special person who touched many people with her compassion, warmth, and generosity of spirit.

She was predeceased by Robert E. Kindred, her husband of 67 years. She is survived by her two daughters, Wanda Kindred Church of Chesapeake, VA and Kay Kindred of Las Vegas, NV; one granddaughter, Ellica Church al Salaam and her husband, Taalib of Bowie, MD; one great-granddaughter, Avaline al Salaam; three nephews, Michael Williams and his wife Janie of Charlotte, NC, Walter Kindred, Jr. and his wife Klinette of Springfield, VA, and Erick Kindred and his wife Georgianna of Petersburg, VA; and a number of cousins.
