Obituary

Dr. Evelyn Sears Peevy was born the seventh of 15 children to Mr. and Mrs. William H. Sears in Norfolk's Olde Huntersville neighborhood. An honor graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in 1941, she continued her education at Hampton Institute, now Hampton University, where she earned both her Bachelor of Arts and Master's degrees in 1945 and 1950, respectively.

For three years, Dr. Peevy taught at Booker T. Washington Intermediate School and later at Jacox Junior High School where she became Head Counselor of the Guidance Department. With an insatiable thirst for knowledge, Dr. Peevy attended career development programs over four years at universities across the country in the late 1960s. In 1981, she earned her doctorate in Counseling from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). Dr. Peevy retired from Norfolk City Public School as a high school counselor in 1985.

Dr. Peevy helped others and served her community all of her life. At her church, the Historic First Baptist Church in Norfolk, she was a Junior Missionary, Sunday School teacher, usher, choir member and Church Clerk. As the Missionary Ministry president for the Mamie E. Gordon Missionary Society, as well as worship facilitator for several local missionary groups, she shared her testimony with others. Later in life, she was also designated an emeritus trustee and a deaconess. Her greatest accomplishment at FBC was as chairman of the Pulpit Committee that selected Rev. Dr. Robert G. Murray as the 19 th Pastor in 1983.

She traveled extensively as 12 th National President of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., for business and professional women.  She was the first African American appointed to the Norfolk Electoral Board and was Chair of the Advisory Board for Tidewater Community College. For over 20 years, Dr. Peevy wrote a weekly column for The New Journal and Guide, "The Civic and Social Whirl." Serving as Worthy Matron of Adah Chapter 20 Order of Eastern Star PHA, member of The Coalition of 100 Black Women and The Women's Club of Norfolk fulfilled her love for fellowship in the community. Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention was close to Dr. Peevy's heart. After retirement, she taught classes at the convention for several years and was elected Chairman of the Board of Lott Carey's Women's Auxiliary. She served faithfully in that position until 2011.

Dr. Peevy is survived by her two daughters, Ms. Eunice Joseph and Ms. Patricia Taylor of Norfolk, daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lillian Taylor of Midlothian, Virginia, three grandchildren, Mr. Aaron P. Taylor of Los Angeles, Mr. David Taylor (Meghan) of Springfield, Virginia, and Ms. Dominique Joseph of Alexandria, Virginia; great-grandchildren, Gavin William Taylor and Peyton Avery Taylor; siblings, Lt. Col.(Ret.) Charles W. Sears (Katherine) of Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Eunice S. Frazier of Hampton, Virginia, Mrs. Lucy S. McCray (Bobby) of Phoenix, Arizona, and Mrs. Lula S. Dr. Peevy was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Master Sgt. 1/c (Ret.) Goldmon Peevy and son, Harry "Bucky" Taylor, III.

Dr. Peevy always lived by her motto, "I shall pass this way but once, if there is any good I can do or any kindness I can show, let me do it now."
