Eugene "Bobby" Combs of Norfolk, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 28th, 2024, two days before his 88th Birthday.
The son of Lillie Mae and Walter Stokes, Bobby was born and raised in the Berkley Area of Norfolk, attended Norfolk Public Schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1955.
Bobby proudly served in the U.S. Air Force. During his military service, while stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany, Bobby joined the "Hit Paraders", a group of servicemen who performed for the Troops. He was dubbed, "Johnny" because fellow troops thought he sounded like Johnny Mathis. He traveled to Greece, Italy and the French Rivera singing and performing with the Hit Paraders.
After years of military service, Bobby relocated to New York. He began his career in Banking and Finance industry. While living in New York, Bobby's passion for music continued. The Big City gave him opportunity to become Lena Horne's biggest fan, attending all of her concerts and shows, and ultimately developed a friendship with her. Until his death, Bobby listened to Lena's music daily and it always bought him joy.
Bobby was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved sisters Lula, Rosa, Marion, Bertha and Virginia. Bobby has 21 nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. He was predeceased by 5, and the surviving 16 will cherish his legacy forever.
He is also survived by a host of extended family and friends.
