David Johnson was born on January 15, 1947 in Washington, D.C. He was raised by the late Katie and Pompie Johnson and raised in the Campostella community of Norfolk and attened Norfolk Public Schools. David later entered the US Army and proudly served during the Vietnam War. After returning home, he became a commercial truck driver, a profession he truly enjoyed. In 2008, David reinvented his life after losing both of his legs. He demonstrated remarkable perseverance, refusing to let this challenge define or limit him. He remained independent, going where he wanted and doing what he what he needed to do. He also took great pride in his appearance, always ensuring he looked his best whereever he went. He leaves to cherish his memory, daughters, Dinah, Aretha, Davia and Sheiana, sons, Terrance and Timothy. He was especially adored by two "hand babies", Sheori and Kylen, who shared a special bond with their grandad. He also leaves behind a host of other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the special love of his life, Idonia Handcox.
