Mr. Dave Sullivan Besteda was born September 3, 1933 in Biloxi, Mississippi to Mose and Mae Lewis Besteda. He was the third of four children and had two sisters Jean and Blanche, one brother Walter who preceded Dave in death. Dave had a normal childhood in Biloxi. He loved to fish in the Gulf and play basketball. Dave was sometimes mistaken for a girl because of his beautiful long and curly locks. After graduating from Biloxi Colored High School, Dave enlisted in the United States Navy in 1952 and served honorably until his retirement in 1972. Dave served and saw combat in both the Korean and Vietnam wars earning him two Purple Hearts for bravery and service. Dave began another career in construction and carpentry in Norfolk, VA after he was honorably discharged. Dave helped to build numerous projects during his career including many of the cities Tunnel Projects. Dave was a master at working with his hands and made personal gifts for family and friends. He made furniture, clocks, examples of his work are present at his residence with a beautiful seating area on the front porch. Dave was preceded in death by his parents Mose and Mae, sisters Jean Besteda of Biloxi, Blanche Douglas Buford of California, brother Walter Besteda of Wisconsin, first cousin Doris Redcross of California, also preceding him was his beloved nephew Kurt Douglas of California and beloved niece Karen Besteda Rose of California originally Chicago and second cousin Doris Gurst Harris. Dave did not have any biological children, but he leaves seven nephews and nieces to cherish his memory; in the order of their births; David Besteda (Chicago) Walter Patton (California) Robbie Douglas (California) Constance (Connie) Besteda (Chicago) Keith Douglas (California) Michele Douglas (California) Laura Bestead (Chicago) also cherishing his memory is his first cousin Audrey Williams(Minnesota) in addition to cherishing his memory are special friends and neighbors of the Lafayette Blvd. block; Rickey and Deborah Knight, Earline Wilson and Terry Hammonds. Dave appreciated their kindness and love towards him. Dave leaves numerous family members, friends and acquaintances of Norfolk, California, Minnesota, Texas and Chicago. Dave was also a gentleman and respectful at all times. He even stood at attention when his physician entered the exam room and remained standing until his doctor was seated. He will be truly missed.
