Clemon Ervin Debnam passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital after an acute illness.  Clemon was born December 9, 1937 in Warrenton, North Carolina to the late Plummer Debnam and Sally Will Davis.  Brothers Robert, Plummer, Ernest, Charles and Michael, and a brother in law Pee Wee preceded him in death.   Clemon was the husband of Mamie Debnam.

Clemon attended John Robert Hawkins High School.  During his teen years, Clemon became quite crafty.  He was known to disassemble many objects, such as his sibling's toys and electronics, and put them back together like brand new.  One Christmas, when Clemon was 13 or 14 years old, his parents gave him a brand new watch and just like that, he tore it up and broke it down as soon as he got it.  However, he managed to put it back like new in no time flat.

Clemon met Mamie Davis at the Blue Light Inn in Norlina, North Carolina.  On December 8, 1956, Clemon married Mamie, and a short time later, in 1958, they moved to Virginia.  During this time, Clemon, along with his big brother and best buddy, Robert, were employed by The Baltimore Steam Packet Company, an American steamship line that provided overnight steamboat service on the Chesapeake Bay, primarily between Baltimore Maryland and Norfolk, Virginia.  Here in Hampton Roads is where Clemon and Mamie settled and started their family. Clemon was forever grateful for the care Mamie provided to him and their family.  The two recently celebrated sixty-four years of marriage.

Clemon was known for being a family man.  Fondly known as "Daddy," Clemon was the father of seven daughters, Diane, Theodora, Helen, Brenda, Nadine, Veronica, and Samantha thus making him the ultimate and original "Girl Dad."

As his lovely daughters began courting, it was not unusual for them to find him sitting and observing in the living room while they were on their dates.

Throughout Clemon's working years, he was also employed by High's Ice Cream, Mary Jane Bakery, and the Virginia Beach Public School System.  Clemon's family's favorite employers were High's Ice Cream and Mary Jane Bakery as his children and grandchildren loved to reap the benefits of any flavor of ice cream at their fingertips on a hot summer day and the soft slice of fresh bread for a midday snack. Clemon was affectionately known as, "The Ice Cream Man."

Clemon enjoyed many things during his pastimes, such as, collecting coins, fishing and crabbing with his brother, Robert, reading the latest Star, Jet, and Ebony Magazines, watching Westerns (Gunsmoke), wrestling, roller derby, rooting for his Eagles, and spending time with his family.  Clemon was a fun guy to be around.  Often joking around with his sister Patricia and her children. A true family man, Clemon always looked forward to family reunions and cookouts with his brothers and sisters and their families.

Clemon loved his family and his family loved him.  Clemon is survived by his wife, Mamie Debnam of Norfolk, Virginia and his daughters, Diane Debnam, Theodora Leigh Lockett, Helen German (Tony), Brenda Jones (Gene), Nadine Debnam-Spivey (Deno), Veronica Debnam, and Samantha Chambers (Richard); siblings , Emma Davis (Nathaniel), Patricia Thornton, Mary Watts, (Leslie); Waverly Debnam, Clyde Debnam (Sabrina), Vernon Debnam (Marie);  Judy Debnam and Shirley Debnam; grandchildren Catres Mayers (Kenneth), Deshawn Debnam (Phelecia), Christopher Debnam, Robert Morris, Sydney Spivey, Nicholas German, Amory Chambers, Rhyan Chambers, and Camryn Chambers; great grandchildren, Darren Debnam, Isaiah Riddick-Debnam, Kennedy Mayers, Kenneth Mayers, Karrington Riddick-Debnam, Yaniyah Harrell, Jace Wilson, Azaria Morris, Roman Morris, and Robert Morris, Jr. and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
