Chuela Cruz Walsh, also known as Sally, passed peacefully in her home surrounded by her children and loved ones on January 19 th , 2023. Chuela Tigno Cruz as her birth name, she was born and raised in Pangasinan, Philippines by her mother, Leonora Tigno Cruz and father, Paulino Cruz and was the last surviving sibling in her family of four sisters and three brothers, may they all rest in peace.
Sally met CPO Thomas J. Walsh while he was stationed in the Philippines where they were married, and he soon moved her to the United States where they raised three children, Cathy, Cheryl and Richard. Sally displayed her courage, strength and devotion to her family as she raised these children while Tom spent many years overseas in the Vietnam War. A multi-talented, intelligent and artistic individual, Sally's first career was as an accomplished cosmetologist followed by obtaining a degree and working as a Certified Nursing Assistant, while juggling all the duties of maintaining the household.
She was a generous and passionate individual and loved her Filipino Community as if they were family, and they were! Sally spent many years volunteering and raising money for the Philippine Cultural Center and the SCAPA, and you could find her most Sundays at the PCC with Fil-Am Bayanihan Club where she was once elected President. She was most proud of her achievement earning the title of 1 st Mutya Ng Pilipinas in 1991 and being crowned by Dr. Manuel Hipol and escorted by the Honorable Delegate Frank Wagner. It one of the highlights of her life!
Deeply loved, and loving deeply back by all that graced her life, she is survived by daughter Cheryl and her husband Adam; son Richard with his wife Jennifer and their children, Chloe and Neil; their Uncle Edward and Auntie Marlyn as well as many nieces and nephews in the Philippines, and her two cats. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Philippine Cultural Center of Virginia 4857 Baxter Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23462 where we will be holding her Celebration of Life. We are sure she will be with us dancing from above!
