Charles Lewis Hobbs was cherished as the son of L.D. Hobbs and Clara Mae Hobbs. He was born on June 3,1957, in Norfolk, Virginia, and was called by God to eternal rest on March 24,2026, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
Charles was preceded by his parents. Mr. L.D. Hobbs and Mrs. Clara Mae Hobbs, and his youngest sister, Ms. Dorethia A. Hobbs.
He is survived by his six children: Deshawn James, Charles James, Gwen James, Jason Hobbs, Tasha Hobbs, and Travis Hobbs. Among his descendants, he leaves behind twenty-four grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
He leaves to cherish his memories with his sister Evelyn Douglas Va. Beach, VA. and three brothers: Nathaniel Hobbs (Donnita of Portsmouth, VA, Curtis L Hobbs Sr. (Amy) of California, Tyrone L.D. Hobbs (Sherynell), of VA. Beach, VA., along with a host of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
He shared a special bond with his lifelong childhood friend and brother in Christ, Mr. Derrick Coleman, (Maria) of Texas.
Charles, also affectionately known as “Charlie” and “Poor Boy” in his younger years, received his education from Norfolk Public Schools and graduated from Booker T, Washington High School. He was known for his intellect, his knowledge of many subjects, and his love for debating life and history. His stories were always engaging and left a lasting impression on family and friends.
He could fix many things and was a great cook.
Charles proudly served his country in the United States Army and later enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. in the Air Force. After his military service, he worked as a civilian, construction foreman. Always seeking new challenges, he later joined the Merchant Seaman, where he continued to excel in his duties as the ship engineer.
Charles eventually relocated to Roanoke, Rapids, North Carolina, to begin a new chapter to share his knowledge and skills, he later faced health challenges and became disabled. He still remained resilient, never losing his smile, sense of humor, or willingness to uplift others with encouragement and wisdom.
He was known as a smart, hardworking, and kind man who brought joy to those around him. A gifted storyteller, Charles had a way of captivating his audience- sometimes leaving them laughing so hard that their ribs ached.
Those who spent time with him will remember how he could brighten even the hardest days with laughter and encouragement.
He was always willing to lend a helping hand, whether working on cars or making small repairs, even when he wasn't feeling his best.
Charles found great joy in working on cars, a skill he proudly passed down to his sons. He even guided his oldest daughter, Gwen, over the phone, coaching her through vehicle troubles sometimes.
He was also an avid fisherman which his mother adored.
Charles leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and strength. He is now free- free from pain, sorrow and sickness-reunited with his mother, father, sister, nephew, niece and great niece... Free at Last, Free at Last, thank God Almighty Charles is free at last.
Sleep, my brother. One day, your loved ones here on earth will see you again.
