Carolyn E Vernon, 80, of Norfolk, VA transitioned peacefully on January 18, 2026. She was the daughter of the late William and Mildred Vernon.
Carolyn, a 1964 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, participated in the Marching Band and Tennis Team. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Norfolk State College and went on to enjoy a 34-year career in education. She taught Science at Southampton Middle School in Courtland, Virginia, where she made a lasting impact on countless lives. She served as Science Department Chairperson, Science Club Sponsor, Activity Club Sponsor, and organizer of Science Fairs.
Carolyn was a dedicated mentor who encouraged excellence. Many of her students received awards inspired by her guidance while others became doctors, lawyers, educators, SCIENTIST and professionals in various fields.
Carolyn devoted her life to her family, friends, and students. She had a quiet strength—a gentle presence. Her zest for life, passion for teaching, kind heart, and generous spirit defined who she was.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, William Vernon, Larry (Carolyn) Vernon, and Grayson Vernon; sister, Gloria (Frank) Pittman; and brother-in-law, Gene Bell.
Her memory will be cherished by her siblings: Roslyn “Dottie” Bell; Delores “Yvonne” (Willie Jr.) Banks; Pamela (Ronald) Green; and Trent (Sharon) Vernon. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Molly Brown and Sondra Vernon. Carolyn was more than an AUNT to over 43 nieces and nephews—she was a mother figure, mentor, and caregiver. She will be missed by her community and many special friends.
Psalm 138:1–2 says “I will praise You, Lord, with all my heart: ... And give thanks to your holy name.
