Dr. Carol Jocelyn Pretlow, the only child of Kenneth Harold Pretlow and Vivian Hughes Pretlow, was born in Salisbury, Maryland on November 9, 1946. She was reared in Smithfield, Virginia on the Pretlow home place on route 258. Carol J. Pretlow died the twenty-fourth day of December 2024 at her home in Norfolk, Virginia.
Carol, a tenured professor in the Department of Political Science at Norfolk State University, taught at Elizabeth City State University and other institutions of higher learning. After graduating from Fisk University with a BA in Political Science Dr. Pretlow later earned a Master's of Arts degree in Mass Communication from Norfolk State University. She also earned the Juris Doctorate (JD) and a Masters of International Legal Studies (LLM) from the Washington College of law of the American University in Washington, DC.
Prior to Dr. Pretlow's work in academia, she was an independent (editor/reporter) fashion consultant with several Hampton Roads publications; was an independent talk show host for WAVY-TV and WRAP Radio 85; and was an assistant news director for WNSB News Radio 91. Carol Jocelyn has also been a commentator of WHRO'S Another View.
During her years on earth, Carol Jocelyn Pretlow was an adventurous individual who traveled widely during her college years living her life doing what she loved --- from fashions to professor to activist. She will be missed by those who loved and respected her.
