The year was 1943. The world was at war. The day was hot, about 90 degrees.  It was August 8, 1943.  His mother, Cora L. Williams prayed that her sixth son and twelfth child would be a special person who would do wondrous things for God.  His name, David Benjamin Williams.  His mother was a woman of great faith and prayer.   She taught him to sing many of the old songs of the Church.  In the community on Calvert Street, he soon became known as "Preacher".

His father, Bishop D. Lawrence Williams, had a great influence on his life. He molded and shaped him for pastoring and evangelizing.  His father trained him in the fear and admonition of God and from a child he knew the importance of attending church.  He often sang before his father preached.  Usually, the song would be "Come Ye Disconsolate."  He served in just about every position in the church, from janitor to Bishop.  He pastored Mason Memorial Church for 49 years. He also founded Outreach for Christ Chapel in Richmond, Va. and Manna House in Virginia Beach, Va.  After founding Inner Cities Ministries, he was consecrated Bishop of Inner Cities Ministries in 2004. He had a vision for God's people and  organized Inner Cities Ministries, Inc. to impact the community in a practical way through the Word of God.

Bishop Williams comes from a large godly family and was preceded in death by his parents, Bishop D. Lawrence Williams, Cora McCullough Williams, Janett Flood Williams, and siblings; Leroy, Dempsey, Lenora, Jessie, Evelyn, Robert, Sarah, Gloria, Charles, Samuel, and William Dove. Of the fourteen siblings, there are three remaining who cherish his memory:  Helen Turner, Ruth Williams, and Joseph Williams (Brenda).

In addition to the church family of Mason Memorial Church of God in Christ, he leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 22 years, Dr. Patricia J. Williams; his children Richard Jernigan (Sharon), Kimberly Nixon, David Nixon, and Latasha Smith; his step-children, Naomi Muse, Dr. Ruth Jones-Nichols (Breon), and David Davis (Shalyse) and God-daughter AnJewell Hawkins. His legacy lives on through fourteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

He was known as the "Preacher's Preacher."

"And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs." Ecclesiastes 12:9.
