Bernard
Elsbery
February 6, 1928 – September 5, 2022
Bernard Elsbery, Sr, also known as "Pop" to his children and "Poppy" to his grandkids, went home to be with the Lord on September 5, 2022. He transitioned peacefully at his home in Norfolk, VA surrounded by family.
Bernard was the oldest son to Willie Connell Elsberry and Alma Lee Elsberry. He was born in LaGrange, TN on February 6, 1928. His original name has two "r's" but due to a typo by the military, all of his children have just one "r" in Elsbery.
Bernard left home at an early age to join the US Navy from which he retired in 1966. After leaving the military, he had many jobs including managing the kitchen staff at Norfolk General Hospital, working at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and retiring from the Military Sea Lift Command.
He enjoyed traveling, cooking, dancing and spending time with friends and family. He was an excellent tailor, cook, and barber. He loved dressing to the nines! Bernard was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to those who knew him. He was the best father-in-law ever!
Bernard is survived by and leaves to cherish his fond memories his brother Wille Elsberry, Jr (Eartha, deceased); his sisters Emma (Jerry) Liddell of LaGrange, TN; Bennye' Elsberry Thomas of Gardenia, CA, and Helen (Willie) McNeil of Memphis, TN.; his children, Bernard Elsbery, Jr, Reginald Elsbery Sr. (Kathy), Luchia Elsbery, Gary Elsbery, Charity Tarie Elsbery (Ronnie), and Keith Deas; 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
