A LIFE OF LOVE AND GRACE
In the early morning hours of Monday, November 17, our beloved brother, uncle, cousin and friend shed his earthly body and gained his heavenly wings. Barry Evan Peebles was born on October 28, 1968, in Norfolk, Virginia. He was the youngest of four siblings. And as the youngest, he was always eager to learn and keep up with what his older sister and brothers were doing. Barry attended Crossroads Elementary and Oakwood Elementary Schools, Rosemont Junior High School and Norview High School. He graduated in 1987 where he played saxophone in the band and earned the role of Drum Major of the Norview Marching Band in his senior Year. He continued his education at Norfolk State University, where he played saxophone in the illustrious Spartan Legion. This was an honor for him and he cherished the camaraderie of being a member of this fantastic musical ensemble. Always a gifted athlete, Barry enjoyed playing pickup games of basketball and football with his friends. However, an unfortunate incident during one such football outing resulted in Barry suffering a spinal cord injury at the age of 22. Despite the many challenges of recovery and rehabilitation through the years, Barry faced it all with humility and grace, and usually with a smile. Over the course of his enduring recovery journey, he gained lifelong allies and friends who were drawn to Barry's optimism, positive attitude, pleasant nature, and unbreakable spirit. Barry was predeceased by his parents, William "Hawkeye" Peebles and Lillie Bernice Peebles. He is survived by his siblings Paula Peebles Bonds (Michael), William "Raki" Peebles III (Mona), and Todd Peebles, his nephews and nieces Michael Bonds (Jihan), Marcus Bonds, Dyamond Peebles and Nadira Peebles, his "blood sister" Gerri "Hon" Dillenberger (John). and many cousins and many lifelong friends and bandmates. Naturally, with a spinal cord injury such as Barry's, there have been many doctors, surgeons, therapists and countless caregivers. The family extends heartfelt and unconditional thanks to the many, many folks who helped Barry live the life he wanted. The Endependence Center played a major role in Barry's dedication to being an advocate for people with disabilities. His post-injury rehabilitation at the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center cultivated enduring connections that remained strong and true to the day of Barry's passing. Until we see you on the other side, Barry, we will continue to love you, miss you and speak your name. Rest well, B-Love.
