Our beloved Barbara A Stevens (Smith), age 73, transitioned to be with our lord and savior on Monday, December 15th, 2025. She peacefully passed away at Viva Memory Care Facility in Chesapeake, VA.Barbara was born in Norfolk, VA to Emmett and Emma Smith Sr on April 7, 1952. Growing up Barbara attended Norfolk Public Schools. She was a graduate of Norview High School. After high school, she attended Elizabeth City State University for two years then transferred to Virginia State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in education. Immediately after receiving her degree, she became an elementary school teacher in Tappahannock, Virginia, where she taught for a few years before transferring to Suffolk Public Schools where she later retired. Barbara truly loved teaching and her students. She made teaching fun! One memory of her is when she made a rap video for her students to learn the Preamble to the US constitution, needless to say, the students passed their test with flying colors and even made local newspaper. Barbara was a very creative teacher. Barbara was a former member of Messiah Presbyterian Church in Norfolk, where she was married in her early twenties and from that union, a daughter was born.Barbara is predeceased by her mother and father, Emma and Emmett and a granddaughter Endiya. She leaves to cherish her daughter Akena Stevens (Norfolk), 5 grandchildren, Jared Stevens (Melis) Germany, Jaimal Bennett Jr (Norfolk), Ema’Ree, Chance, and Justice, 1 brother Emmett Smith Jr, and a niece, nephew and a host of family and friends. She will deeply be missed.
